“Dissection of New Employement Law and the Autumn Budget” – What can we expect?

We are happy to let you know about an event we are hosting together with JMW on Tuesday 19 November and Thursday 28 November.

Labour has made it clear there will be big changes affecting employers during its time in office and it intends to make big steps towards that in its first 100 days, which takes us up to 12 October 2024. The King’s Speech on 17 July confirmed the New Labour government’s priorities for the months ahead. Two employment law bills were announced, which are the Employment Rights Bill and the Equality (Race and Disability) Bill.

With the 12 October looming and the Autumn budget of the 30 October set, several proposed legislative changes present a complex mix of business challenges, particularly regarding hiring and workforce management. Rising operational costs, stricter employment laws, and increased compliance requirements which will require businesses to adapt quickly. By considering these potential scenarios and taking proactive steps, we can better navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the budget and legal reforms.

Joining Beever and Struthers on Tuesday 19 November and Thursday 28 November will be Paul Chamberlain, Partner and Head of Employment at JMW Solicitors. Together, we’ll take an honest and insightful look at what’s been announced, the impacts, challenges, and opportunities ahead, and what these political shifts mean for employers across the UK.

Anticipated changes include:

  • Corporation Tax increases, and reforms to sick pay and employment rights.
  • Day one rights, ending fire and rehire, extending SSP and maternity rights, and flexible working.
  • Significant reforms to zero-hours contracts and unfair dismissal rights.
  • Employers will face rising hiring costs and increased legal obligations, making recruitment and workforce management more complex.
